Irregular Menstrual Cycle

Missed periods, too frequent periods, spotting, or bouts of heavy clotting and bleeding are usually caused by an underlying hormonal imbalance that is easily treated. Most of us have missed a period at one point or another — some with anticipation of a pregnancy, others because of anxiety or tension. Menstruation differs from one woman to another, some menstruate like clockwork, while others report never having had a regular cycle. One thing is a given, however: shifts in hormonal balance will alter whatever pattern a woman has experienced in the past. Such shifts are especially common in perimenopause.

Here are some possible factors that can contribute for IRREGULAR MENSTRUATION:

* Significant weight gain or loss
* Over-exercise
* Poor nutrition (or a diet too high in carbohydrates)
* Smoking
* Drug use
* Caffeine
* Excessive alcohol use (interfering with how the liver metabolizes estrogen and progesterone)
* Eating disorders
* Increased stress
* Polycystic ovarian syndrome/estrogen dominance
* Uterine abnormalities (fibroids/cysts/polyps/endometriosis)
* Hormonal imbalance related to perimenopause
* Medications
* Chemotherapy
* Recent childbirth, miscarriage, or D&C
* Breastfeeding

There are so many factors to consider in determining the reasons for irregular menstruation so its better go to the nearest service provider and consult your OB-GYN for proper management.

The Orientation

>> Friday, June 6, 2008

We had our faculty orientation at Davao Doctors College yesterday (June 6, 2008)..as part time and first time teacher the things they were discussing were new to me..good thing i wasn't the only one..two of batch mates were also there and like me they are first timers as well..we were oriented on classroom management, responsibilities, employee benefits, do's and don'ts and we were given class schedules and course outlines..I was told that i will be handling 1st year students (introduction to radiology) and 2nd year students (radiophysics)..the class schedule is quite hard for me coz my class is until the evening..very late actually..i have to speak in front of my students almost five hours...i don't even have any idea what to say or what to do...usually on the first meeting you don't really start the class right away....good luck again..i really hope i won't mess up my first day..coz that would mean my whole semester will also be messed up...

RT Licensure Exam (June 2008)

>> Wednesday, June 4, 2008

Good luck to all the Radtech who will take the Licensure examination this June..Hope most of you will pass, if not all. .I know it won't be easy, but as long as you know you have read and studied enough you don't have to worry..All you have to do is leave everything to God..He always has the last say on everything..Because no matter how much you study, if He doesn't will it, it will never happen. But if you will not make it there is always a next time..no point loosing hope or feeling ashamed..coz even the most intelligent people fails in exams..that's why most people say that taking examinations sometimes is a matter of luck...

Breast Cancer Detection (MRI and Mammography)

>> Tuesday, June 3, 2008

Latest Radiologic News (from mdlinx)

Screening with both MRI and mammography might rule out cancerous lesions better than mammography alone in women who are known or likely to have an inherited predisposition to breast cancer.

Methods
A review to summarize the sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios, and post-test probability associated with adding MRI to annual mammography screening of women at very high risk for breast cancer

Studies published after 1994 in which MRI and mammography were used to screen in high risk women

Literature search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases from Jan 1995-Sept 2007, supplemented by hand searches of pertinent articles

Methods and potential biases of studies were assessed by 2 reviewers

Data were extracted and entered into 2 x 2 tables that compared American College of Radiology Breast

Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) scores

MRI plus mammography, mammography alone, or MRI alone with results of breast tissue biopsies were included

Results

11 relevant, prospective, nonrandomized studies were identified

Characteristics of women included age range, history of breast cancer, and BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation status

Studies used contrast-enhanced MRI were interpreted w/o knowledge of mammography results

The summary negative likelihood ratio and the probability of a BI-RADS–suspicious lesion were 0.70 and 1.4% for mammography alone and 0.14 and 0.3% for the combination of MRI plus mammography
